| ISTE Conference and Student Essay Competition on Technology for Rural India |
| |
May 2008: In celebration of the ISTE Day 2008, the Delhi Section of the Indian Society of Technical Education (ISTE) hosted a conference on “Technology for Rural India: Challenges and Perspectives”. The conference focused on strategic technological development and research on problems specific to rural India. The event was targeted to educationists, researchers and students and included technical sessions, invited lectures, special workshops, interactive sessions and student activities. |

The student essay competition asked them to write on a specific problem in no more than six pages that affects rural India and a well-defined technological solution for that problem. This event was intended to sensitize the students to the issues concerning the impact of modern day technologies on the rural lifestyles. |

June 2008: Shitikanth from the Bombay zone is the All-India topper in the prestigious IIT-JEE examination. Of the 3,11,258 candidates who appeared in the examination conducted on April 13, 8,652 candidates have been declared qualified to seek admission in the 6,872 seats in IITs at Chennai, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Mumbai, Roorkee and some proposed new IITs, Institute of Technology-Banaras Hindu University and Indian School of Mines University, Dhanbad. |

| Green – Abad Campaign by Hyderabad Students |

July 2008: Green stamps, green caps and a green song. The tree plantation drive of Green-Abad campaign kickstarted at Silver Oaks School in Hyderabad, when around 400 saplings were planted and had all the green ingredients to set the pattern for things to come for the one lakh plantation drive being undertaken in association with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation. |

Braving the sun, hundreds of students gathered to show their solidarity to the green cause as they read out their school's new green agendas of gifting saplings instead of perishable bouquets and planting trees to commemorate birthdays of students and staff in the newly created 'birthday garden'. After all, these steps were crucial as one student explained how he feared "the hole in the ozone" and the "polluted air we breathe". |

Teach India |

August 2008 :Teach India is a nation-building initiative (or social initiative) from the Times of India that brings together children in need of education and people who can contribute a little time towards teaching them. It is based on one simple principle: If you have the desire to teach, they will put you in touch with underprivileged children who are willing to learn. With over sixty of India’s committed NGOs, corporates, schools and social organizations already supporting the cause, they now are inviting and registering selfless individuals to come forward and help change the future of a child forever, by giving just a few hours a week to Teach India. |

Teach India aims to help undereducated children through a variety of programmes, including basic education, support classes and even story-telling. These are all very easy to teach programmes in which simple topics have to be taught to children mostly at primary school level the teaching would be one-on-one or to small groups of children. The type of programme a volunteer is assigned to, will be decided after assessment by an NGO, keeping the location and time preference of volunteer in mind. |

Over 35 mn kids benefit from Government Project |

September 2008: Over 35 million children have joined the education system since the launch of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), a project by Government of India that aims for universal access to education. Significant progress has taken place since the 2001 launch of SSA including that 3.68 crore (36.8 million) children have joined the education system. The number of drop-out children has declined from 3.20 crore (32 million) in 2001-02 to 45 lakh (4.5 million) in 2007-08. |

Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan takes note of the fact that provision of elementary education is largely made by the government and government aided schools. There are also private unaided schools in many parts of the country that provide elementary education. Poorer households are not able to afford the fees charged in private schools in many parts of the country. There are also private schools that charge relatively modest fees and where poorer children are also attending. Some of these schools are marked by poor infrastructure and low paid teachers. While encouraging all efforts at equity and 'access to all' in well-endowed private unaided schools, efforts to explore areas of public-private partnership are also being made. Government, Local Body, and government aided schools are covered under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, as is the practice under the Mid Day Meal scheme and DPEP. |

The SSA is based on the principles of universal access, equity and quality. The government is making efforts to ensure universal access all over the country by 2010, while improving the quality of education simultaneously. |
